The Schüco ASE 80 HI is the door for openings that outgrow standard sliding systems. HI stands for "heavy industrial" — a slightly misleading name for what is, in the residential market, the specification for very large glazed openings with correspondingly heavy panels.
What lift-and-slide actually means
Standard sliding doors run their panels on rollers permanently in contact with the bottom track. That means friction, seals compressed only lightly, and a practical upper limit on how large and how heavy the panels can be before operation becomes cumbersome.
Lift-and-slide systems change the mechanics. Turning the handle 180° lifts the panel a few millimetres off its seals and onto its rollers, then the panel slides. Closing reverses the movement — the panel slides into position, then lowers onto its seals to close.
Two consequences:
- Panels up to 500kg can be operated by hand, because they're only carrying that weight when moving.
- When closed, the panels sit hard against their seals — weather sealing is materially better than a standard slider.

Those panel maxima translate to genuinely enormous openings. A three-panel arrangement can span more than 9m of glass width in a single opening.
When lift-and-slide is the right specification
- Openings above 4.5m where you want to keep a two-panel configuration for maximum glass.
- Panels above 250kg — the standard ASE 60 hits its comfortable operating limit here.
- Exposed sites where the additional seal compression of lift-and-slide materially improves weather performance.
- Homes where the door will be operated frequently — the lift-and-slide mechanism handles daily use far better than a heavy standard slider.
When it's overspecified
For a 3m or 4m rear extension with modest panel sizes, standard sliding on the ASE 60 or ASE 80 is fully adequate and meaningfully less expensive. Lift-and-slide is a specific answer to a specific size problem.
Operational feel
This is the interesting part. Because lift-and-slide panels are lifted onto rollers before moving, the sliding motion itself is exceptionally smooth. Once initiated, a well-adjusted ASE 80 HI panel takes very little force to move even at maximum weight. The trade-off is the handle motion: closing is a deliberate two-part action — slide to position, then lower the handle. It's not automatic in the way a standard slider is, and it needs a moment's habituation.
Cost expectations
Installed cost for the ASE 80 HI runs at approximately 50–80% above an equivalent standard ASE 80. For a 6m two-panel lift-and-slide, that's roughly £22,000–£32,000 ex-VAT installed. The system is a specifier's product; quotes below that range for the genuine ASE 80 HI at that opening size are worth scrutinising.
Alternative specifications to consider
Before committing to the ASE 80 HI, three questions:
- Would a four-panel standard slider get you the same openable area at lower cost?

Lift-and-slide is the right answer to a narrow question: very large glazed openings with heavy panels operated daily. Where that question doesn't apply, the correct specification is the ASE 60 or ASE 80. Where it does apply, the ASE 80 HI is the reference system in the UK market.
