A Schüco bifold door installation looks straightforward from the outside — the frame arrives, it goes in, the panels get hung. In reality, the work that determines whether the door still opens sweetly ten years later happens in the two days before the panels arrive on site. This guide walks through what a competent Schüco bifold installation actually involves.
Before the door arrives: opening preparation
The single biggest cause of bifold problems isn't the door itself — it's a structural opening that isn't square, level, or properly supported. Before ordering, the installer should be checking:
- Deflection of the lintel. Bifolds hang from the top track. A steel or engineered timber lintel that deflects even 3–4mm under load will pinch the sliding gear.
- Level of the sub-cill/threshold zone. Out-of-level by more than around 2mm across the full width and the panels start to catch.
- DPC (damp-proof course) and cavity trays above and around the opening.
- Drainage detail on the outside — especially for flush thresholds.
Delivery and unpacking
A Schüco AS FD 75 door arrives as a completed outer frame plus individual glazed panels. On a typical 4-panel installation, that's roughly 6–8 pieces to move into position. Panel weights are meaningful — a single 900mm × 2.1m double-glazed panel is around 55–65kg — so a proper installation crew is two people minimum, three for larger configurations.
Frame fixing
The outer frame is fixed through pre-drilled positions in the head, jambs and sub-cill. Correct practice on a Schüco system is:
- Dry-fit the frame; check plumb and square with a long spirit level and diagonals.
- Pack behind the frame with load-bearing packers (not off-cuts of DPC) at every fixing point.
- Fix in a specified sequence to avoid twisting the frame — Schüco's installation manual sets this out.
- Only after fixing and re-checking should the panels be hung.
Hanging and adjusting the panels
Panels hang from top-track carriages. Each carriage has adjustable vertical and lateral bolts, and the door is essentially "tuned" onto its opening by working through the panels in order. Getting this right takes 30–60 minutes per door and is the step homeowners rarely see. If a bifold door is heavy to fold, or if the meeting stiles don't kiss cleanly, this is almost always the reason.
Sealing and finishing
Perimeter sealing is done in two layers: an expanding foam tape (compriband) behind the frame, and a colour-matched external silicone bead after the door is trimmed in. On the internal face, plaster reveals should not touch the frame — a 3–5mm expansion gap is left and covered by architrave or a trim.
Sign-off checks

- All panels fold and stack without catching.
- Traffic door opens and closes with the multi-point lock engaging cleanly.
- Threshold drain slots (if fitted) are clear and visible.
