Smart locks on front doors have gone from niche to normal in five years. This is a practical look at how a Schüco aluminium front door — typically the AD UP 75 — integrates with the Kubu smart-lock ecosystem, and what smart really means in this context.
What Kubu actually is
Kubu is a UK-designed smart-lock retrofit. It doesn't replace your multi-point locking mechanism. Instead, it sits inside the door leaf next to the existing lock cylinder and reports the physical state of the lock — bolts thrown, bolts open — to a phone app over WiFi and Bluetooth.
That is a meaningful design choice. Because Kubu is monitoring the mechanical lock rather than operating it, the physical security of a PAS 24 Schüco door is not compromised. The lock still works exactly as it always did with a physical key or thumb-turn.

What it does for you
- Confirms lock state remotely. Left the house and can't remember if you locked the door? The app tells you.
- Notifies on unlock. When the door is unlocked while you're away, you get a push notification.
- Integrates with home routines. Some ecosystems can trigger scenes — heating, lighting — when the door is unlocked.
What it doesn't do
Kubu is a monitoring layer, not a keyless entry system. It does not unlock the door for you. There are keyless mechanisms available for the Schüco entrance-door range separately, but they involve replacing the cylinder with an electronic one and that's a bigger conversation about security certification.
Compatibility with Schüco doors
Kubu is compatible with any Schüco entrance door built around a Euro-profile cylinder — which is essentially all of them, including the AD UP 75 range. Installation involves swapping the standard cylinder for a Kubu-enabled cylinder of the same length, and mounting the reader unit on the internal face of the door. There is no structural modification.
Retrofitting to an existing Schüco door
Retrofit is straightforward. Measure the existing cylinder (external length + internal length + centre), order the matching Kubu cylinder, swap it, pair the reader unit to WiFi. Total install time is around 20 minutes if you're comfortable measuring a cylinder — otherwise ask the original installer to fit it.
Insurance considerations
UK home insurance policies typically require locks to meet BS 3621 or an equivalent standard. Kubu-enabled cylinders that are TS007 3-star rated (or equivalent) meet or exceed common insurer requirements. Check the specific cylinder you're ordering — not all variants carry the same rating.
When smart integration doesn't make sense
We are not universal advocates of smart-locking front doors. Two cases where we'd push back:
- Homes with unreliable WiFi at the front door position. If the router is at the back of a large house, notifications may fail intermittently. Poor smart-lock behaviour is worse than no smart lock.
- Rental properties with high tenant turnover. The value of smart monitoring depends on someone paying attention to the app.
